On November 4, 2001, CLBC, in conjunction with the California Library Association's African American Round Table, co-sponsored a panel discussion at the CLA Conference entitled, California's Library Schools: Vision of the Present and Future.

The program, moderated by Barbara Murray, City Librarian, Oxnard Public Library, featured the directors of California's library school programs:
Kenneth Dowlin, San Jose State University, Fullerton Program
Virginia A. Walter, UCLA Dept. of Info Studies, UCLA
Blanche Woolls, San Jose State University, School of Library and Info Science
Michael Buckland, UC Berkeley, School of Information Management and Systems
Lesley Farmer, California State University Long Beach

The directors provided an overview of their programs, with their perceptions on today's job market, the impact of diversity issues, the factors influencing student and faculty recruitment/retention, the influence of professional organizations, and how they foresee the future. An open question period from the audience followed.
