Faculty and Student Demographics and Size of Program:
Faculty: 14 headcount, 10.5 FTE (9 FT, 5 PT; 10 male, 4 female; 1 Asian-American, rest Other)
Students: Masters degree (2 year program): 83 active (36, male; 42 female; average age 26)
Ph.D: 14 active (7 male; 7 female; average age 28).
 
Program strengths, specializations, or other unique features:
Strong in technology, economics, and information policy. Selective admissions. Accreditation of Masters program by ALA Committee on Accreditation has not been requested, but graduates can be considered "or equivalent" if they have taken library-related courses. Students are approx: 50% domestic; 50% foreign.

Masters graduates average starting salary in 2000:
$71,090; 2001 (to date): $73,400.

Library Media Teachers Services Credential Program

Primary Mission
The Library Media Teacher Services Credential Program at CSULB is designed to prepare fully-qualified, outstanding Library Media Teachers for California K-12 schools to meet the information and reading needs of its diverse student population. The program is based on the principles and philosophy of Information Power, the American Association of School Librarians' guidelines. As such, the program emphasizes the triple role of the Library Media Teacher as Teacher/Partner, Information Specialist and Program Administrator.
 
Faculty and Student Demographics and Size of Program:
Faculty: 1 TENURE-TRACK ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR; 8 PT LECTURERS.
Students: 110 Students; 85% Anglo, 5% Black, 5% Asian, 5% Latino; Average age 43, from Santa Barbara to San Diego. Many students are working towards their credential while on an Emergency LMT Services Permit.

LMT Services Credential; Interdisciplinary Master of Arts in School Librarianship
 
Program strengths, specializations, or other unique features:
Focus on school librarianship to deepen networking and focus discussion. Classes blend theory and practice and include service learning. Classes offered year-round. Classes offered in Long Beach, Northridge and San Diego areas. Classes meet on Saturdays 5-6 times a semester. Classes enhanced with Internet opportunities- 2 classes now offered completely online -- at least 1 more is slated for online. Field work can be located near your home or work setting. Interdisciplinary MA blends credential with degree (4 additional courses). Program is CCTC and NCATE accredited.

Primary Mission:
In support of the San José State University Mission, the School of Library and Information Science educates professionals to address the information needs of their community, the nature of information and its uses and its supporting technologies through teaching, research, service, and leadership.
 
Faculty & Student Demographics and Size of Program:
Faculty: 12 full-time, 5 women, 7 men; 3 Asian Pacific. Part-time faculty is drawn from California and throughout the United States. This term we have distance education instructors in Kansas and Texas. Next term instructors will be located in Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Missouri, and our summer faculty will be teaching online from even more locations.
Students:This term we have 856 students registered in classes. This is an increase of 100 from fall, 2000.

Program strengths, specializations, or other unique features:
Our program strengths include the school library media teacher credential, special libraries (Bill Fisher, 2001/2002 Special Libraries Association President-Elect, is on our faculty), academic libraries, public libraries, digital libraries and medical informatics. Other unique features include our growing distance education opportunities. A visit to our website will show you the variety of formats for class from traditional (3 hours a week for 15 weeks) to totally web based (all instruction online) with many "in-between," such as our six-day intensives and our 1 face-to-face with the remainder on the web.
Faculty at SLIS are active in state, national and international professional associations and encourage students to become active also. Our ALA Student Chapter has been named chapter of the year (2000) and runner-up chapter of the year (2001).
