Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc. (ASALH)

Founded in 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) is the premier organization dedicated to the research, preservation, and dissemination of information about Black life, history, and culture. ASALH continues to serve as the institutional home for the study of African American history and is the official founder of Black History Month.

 

ALA Challenge Reporting
Even before the formal adoption of the Library Bill of Rights in 1939, ALA has provided support, guidance, and resources to librarians faced with censorship. Since 1990, the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) has maintained a database on challenged materials. Reporting censorship and challenges to materials, resources, and services is vital to developing the best resources to defend library resources and to protect against challenges before they happen.
